Part 1: Choosing and Progressing Your Main Character

Your main character is the backbone of your entire MapleStory experience. It's the character you'll spend the most time on, and every decision around your Legion and Link Skills is aimed at making your main stronger.

Step 1: Choosing a Class

Picking a class is one of the most exciting parts of MapleStory. The right class will make grinding, questing, and bossing easier, so it’s important to pick a class that you’ll enjoy.

Recommended Beginner Classes:

Wind Archer: Easy to play + Strong Bosser (Just hold down one button), bowmen have the laziest grinding on Eluna (Guided Arrow + Erda Fountain)
Dawn Warrior: A solid class that has straightforward mechanics. Very good at grinding and multiple, low-cooldown iframes for bossing.
Battle Mage: Decent Bossing Damage but high value due to their support skills, very good mobbing and one of the strongest 6th job origins in the game.
Buccaneer: Very strong bossing capability and easy mobbing with low funding, insane burst and fun to play. (superjump around the map)

Step 2: Leveling Up Efficiently (1–285)

The goal with your main character is to level up as quickly as possible to access better content and bosses. Here’s an easy leveling path to follow that's relevant for your links and legion aswell:

  • Level 1–100 - Dreamer 1-100 NPC in Eluna map
(infinite entries so do this on every single character)

Go to the most right top of the map, you'll find Spiegelette, this will get you to level 100 very quickly and efficiently.

    View attachment 1804
  • Level 100–260 3x daily per account (1x per character):

The most efficient way would be to use the first 3 daily entries of tisk on a mercedes, evan and your burning main. That way, you have 2 EXP link skills, which will help your main and all other links to level even quicker. Your main will be at around level 230, at that point you can decide to just do daily tisk or grind the old fashioned way (Arcane River with totems and EXP coupons). Totems are really cheap, and when you buy them you usually get atleast their worth back so never farm without a fury totem.

EXP Coupons are from Vote Point Shop in the Eluna map, most right most bottom platform. You can get 1 24 hour coupon by voting just once daily. So you can always have 2x exp coupon on atleast, alongside the other ones you get from leveling, events etc. This coupon stacks with all other EXP Buffs.

  • Level 260-285: Buy Transcendent potions at whatever shop you can (boss point shop, dreamer event red fragment shop) to level to 285 asap to unlock all Sacred Symbols to maximize your damage ASAP. To maximize the experience rewards, make sure to use Transcendent Potions at higher levels instead of 260-265, 265-270 preferably.

  • Beyond Transcendent potions, you should do MPE daily (Monster Park Extreme) and have always 100 Donation Points (DP) (you can buy Donation Points from other players for mesos or even items) to triple your exp rewards, rewarding you hours/days worth of exp in a single 5 minute session) Just with level 260+ EXP potions and MPE you can get to level 285 in around 2 weeks. If you want to train/grind further, besides the daily MPE just farm at any cernium+ map you can one shot with exp coupons and the totem.
These areas will give you a steady flow of experience and familiar tickets and 6th job materials which are crucial for your progression and damage.

Step 3: Gear and Upgrades

MapleStory revolves heavily around gear, and upgrading your equipment is crucial to becoming more powerful. Here are the basics of gearing up:

Spell Tracing: Spell tracing is a system that allows you to enhance your gear by applying Spell Traces, which increase an item’s base stats like attack, magic attack, main stat and defense; to use it effectively, collect Spell Traces from monsters, and apply them to your equipment with a success rate based on the type of scroll chosen, ensuring your gear gets stronger as you progress in the game. The system is intuitive you just double click the spell traces, put the item you want to spell trace and choose the scroll that gives wanted stats.
Star Force your gear: Star Force increases your equipment’s stats significantly. Aim for 10–12 stars early on as its cheap and not risky, while giving significantly boosting your stats and damage.
Flame stats: Flames improve your item’s base stats, and it’s easy to farm flames from daily bosses like Hard Ranmaru, Chaos Horntail, Normal Arkarium, Normal Pink Bean, Normal Magnus, Hard Von Leon and sometimes other bosses.
Magic Potential: you can enhance your gear by purchasing a Leg Potential Scroll Service for around 100m mesos smegaing B>Leg Pot SVC 100M, then focus on using cubes (Red or Black) to reroll your equipment’s potential for optimal stats, aiming for potentials that boost ATT%/M. ATT%,Boss Damage%, or Ignore Enemy Defense% ideally for your Weapon, Secondary weapon (shield or w/e) and Emblem. The rest should be cubed for your main stat %.

Meso and drop gear: You should aim for 100% meso drop rate (60% from your medal) and add two more meso drop lines on different accessories. This will max out your meso drop rate from gear at 100%. Additionally, focus on obtaining a few item drop rate% lines on your accessories, as this takes priority over damage for farming efficiency.

Part 2: Building Your Legion

What is Legion and Why is it Important?

The Legion System allows you to gain account-wide buffs and stat increases by leveling multiple characters across different classes. This is where synergy comes into play. As you level more characters, your main character benefits from passive buffs like increased damage, increased Ignore Enemy Defense, increased boss damage, increased critical damage, critical rate, main stat and even meso% obtained and exp% obtained%.

The easiest way to build up your Legion is to use your free daily tisk runs on multiple different characters. Giving you around 600 legion everyday for basically free.

How to Build Your Legion

Level multiple characters: The goal is to have as many characters at level 250 to max Legion effects for that character.
Prioritize specific characters: Some characters provide more useful effects for your Legion grid. Focus on these first:

Zero (EXP% Obtained upto 12%, which will help you level the rest of your links/legion)
Shade, Hayato (Up to 6% Critical Damage each)
Kanna, Demon Avenger (Up to 6% Boss Damage each)
Blaster, Beast Tamer (Up to 6% Ignore Enemy Defense each)

Why Legion Matters:

Legion provides essential stat boosts that apply to all your characters, making the game easier. For example:
  • More Critical Damage means higher damage output.
  • Boss Damage boosts help you kill bosses faster, which is crucial for gear progression.
  • Ignore Enemy Defense enhances damage output by reducing the effectiveness of an enemy's defense, allowing attacks to penetrate more of their defenses and deal greater damage.
With a stronger Legion, even your secondary characters (called mules) will farm better, and your main will be stronger, more resilient, and deal more damage in all game content. Also, you get more legion points the higher legion you have and the more characters you have applied.

This is how 9000 Legion looks like for a bishop (not ideal, but very close) I also marked all important info. (Start Raid only after starting the Legion Quests, otherwise its pretty much pointless):
View attachment 1862
You assign members to the stats you want to increase (for all jobs you need different stats, so gotta check in-depth guides for your class specifically) but its basically a grid which is tetris like and you just fill it up to get the stats you need. Its worth is infinite so you are looking to maximize your gains out of this feature in the game.

Part 3: Maximizing Link Skills

What Are Link Skills and Why Are They Important?

Link Skills are another form of account-wide buff, where each class provides a unique skill that can be transferred to other characters. These skills stack on top of your Legion buffs, further boosting your damage, survivability, and leveling efficiency.

The Most Important Link Skills to Level:

Here are some of the most essential Link Skills to boost your main:

  1. Mercedes (EXP boost): Faster leveling speed.
  2. Evan (Rune Duration increase): Increases the rune duration.
  3. Phantom (Critical Rate): Adds Critical Rate, crucial for increasing your overall damage.
  4. Demon Avenger (Damage increase): Adds flat damage, useful for all classes.
  5. Luminous (Ignore Enemy Defense): Increases damage against bosses, helping you tackle harder fights.
You want all of them at some point, but these are generally the best to start out with.

How to unlock character slots for higher legion and more link skills:
Buy them through Vote Point shop (4VP)

Boss Point shop:

Minigame Merchant:

These are the easiest ways to get character slot expansion coupons consistently.

How to Level Link Skills Quickly:
  • 1-100: Dreamer NPC as in the picture above.
  • 100-210 (Level 3 link skill is at 210): Tooh, Tisk as in the picture above.
  • 210-250: Make sure to max your Hyper Stat EXP Obtained for all your legion mules and links as this gives you up to 10% exp obtained at level 15, you can always reset if you choose to:

    View attachment 1851
For legion mules, at level 200 unlock 5th job on the white lightbulb on the left of the screen, disassemble your nodes by opening V matrix (5th job tab in skills) and craft holy symbol for more exp obtained to level up that character faster:
    View attachment 1856
    View attachment 1857
    View attachment 1858
Then put this nodestone on by double clicking it after clicking 'View My Nodes'. You will now have it as a 5th job skill, and whenever you go tisk or farm, use this skill for +20% exp obtained including inside tisk (exp coupons don't work in tisk)

How Link Skills Synergize with Your Main and how to use them:

Your Link Skills work hand-in-hand with your Legion buffs. While Legion provides passive stat boosts like Critical Damage and Boss Damage, Link Skills allow you to further tailor your main character’s strengths. By stacking damage bonuses and EXP boosts, you make your main character far more efficient at both leveling and bossing, which is crucial for game progression.

3. Legion Daily Quests (They are good at the start, optional once you are at 4k legion)
4. 3x Daily Tisk for Link skills/Legion (1x per char, 3x per account total)
5. Arcane River Dailies & Weeklies:
For Arcane River dailies, EX: Arcane River @ Lv. 210, the quest "Investigation Findings 1" will appear in the White Lightbulb after you've gotten done with all the dialogue with Rona. This can be done before you accept your daily/weekly quests. So instead of 600, it would be 400. So on and so forth with the same quests appearing at their respective levels as stated above. (Investigation Findings 2 at 220) (After accepting all lightbulbs eventually, you should have only 200 mobs to kill in each arcane river map instead of 600/400, the minimum is 200 and is what you are aiming for by accepting these lightbulbs.)

6. 3x Daily Reward Dungeon View attachment 1842Gives mesos and insane rewards.
7. Daily & Weekly Bosses for mesos and drops (sell crystals to the collector, you can sell the dropped level flames in auction house)
8. Minigame (Night Tag, 500 points daily, super important shop with insane items, most important are the event rings)

View attachment 1848
View attachment 1844
Night Tag: can be played with up to 6 players (recommended, usually people R>Night Tag in Smega, and you should too to help people) and is a simple game of hide and seek. The tagger has their screen mostly blacked out and will have to catch players. The tagger receives 25 points for each player tagged, while players that are tagged receive 25 points. All remain afk, the tagger must move a bit from side to side to tag all. Average game length 1:30 minutes.

Roll Roulette: involves at least two players using the @roll command ingame and is to be done when 4 people are capped (have 500/500 points in minigame from nighttag) only those who are not yet capped are to @roll. Average game length 1 minute. Gives up to 100 points (depending on the size of the party, 6 players for 100 points) to the winner and gives the rest 25 points.

9. Claim Daily Gift

260+ dailies:

Erda booster daily
View attachment 1846
Grandis Dailies. (Lightbulbs on the left)
Erda's request: kill 500 mobs at cernium or above. (Lightbulbs on the left)
Monster Park Extreme: One time daily, make sure to have 100 Donation Points (DP)(can buy from other players for 400m) At the end of the run, it asks you whether you want to claim the reward, or triple the reward for a 100 Donation Points, choose the latter to gain 3x exp, which is an insane amount of EXP you should never miss out on. Definitely worth 400m every single day. Every player takes a corner of the map, and when all are ready, one summons the boss. All must call out where the boss is, and kill it as fast as possible. You usually need strong players to kill this boss. Each time you lose the boss fight, you redo the boss fight, and each time it gets weaker. Never give up. :)

Final Tips for Success:

  • Focus on your main character first, but don’t neglect your Legion and Link Skills. They provide long-term rewards that make the game easier and more enjoyable.
  • Join a guild for additional buffs, guidance, and a community that can help you improve your gameplay.
  • Buy Pet Vac from the minigame event shop. It costs 1 meso each. There is iirc 3x pet vac from the vote point shop aswell. You can also buy Pet Vac for Mesos by Smegaing. Only Pet Vac bought by Donation Points is tradeable.
By mastering these three systems, doing dailies and weeklies you'll build a strong account, a powerful main character, and be well-equipped to take on any challenge in ElunaMS!

Note:
All familiars start with common tier rank when unlocked. The tier color shown before unlocking doesn't matter. Be cautious to prevent meso loss by people in the auction house! Find whatever familiar you like and either fuse it to unique or cube it straight up to legendary.
If you buy a legendary familiar like Mori Ranmaru, its actual stats are just common. The only reason these are up for sale is for people who want specific familiars, as they are with you most of the time grinding/bossing. Consider buying Rare+ Familiars only for your style. They give nothing else.
